Standard vs. Full Auto Coverage

Choosing auto insurance at Desjardins is simple: no fuss, no hassle. If you feel you need a little more than minimum coverage, but not quite full coverage either, don’t worry. We’re flexible. We can offer you the best of both worlds.

Available Coverage

Third Party Liability

Required. Covers you if you damage someone else’s property, or if someone is injured or dies in an automobile accident. By law, you must have at least $200,000 in liability coverage, but most people choose $1,000,000 or $2,000,000 coverage.

Accident Benefits

Required. Covers you and your family if you are injured or killed in an automobile accident, whether it’s your fault or not. Benefits include:

      • supplementary medical expenses
      • rehabilitation
      • attendant care
      • caregiver, non-earner and income replacement

Direct Compensation Property Damage or DCPD

Required. This coverage protects you for damage to your automobile in an accident that is not entirely your fault. So, regardless of who is at fault, you deal directly with us.

Uninsured Automobile

Required. Protects you and your family if you’re injured or killed by a driver who is not insured, or by a hit-and-run driver. It also covers your car if it’s damaged by a driver who’s not insured.

Family Protection

Optional. Gives you and your family the same protection limits as your Third Party Liability coverage if you’re involved in a not-at-fault car accident with someone who has less insurance, no insurance, or is an unidentified driver (e.g., hit and run). This coverage is automatically included in all policies.

It also covers you and your family if you travel in a province or a state where the mandatory liability coverage is lower. Also known as “Endorsement 44”.

Collision

Required if the vehicle is leased or financed, otherwise optional. Covers you if your car hits another object, or if your car rolls over. Without collision coverage, if you’re entirely at fault in an automobile accident, your vehicle repairs are not covered.

Comprehensive

Required if the vehicle is leased or financed, otherwise optional. Covers you if your car is stolen, vandalized, damaged by fire, or if windows are broken or cracked.

Removing Depreciation Deduction

Optional. If you buy or lease a new car and it’s stolen or written off in an accident within the first two years, we’ll replace your vehicle. Also known as “Endorsement 43”.

Transportation Replacement

Transportation Replacement pays for a car rental, taxi or public transit when your car is in the shop because of a loss or damage to your car that is covered by your policy. You don’t have to have this coverage, but it makes the whole inconvenient experience of being in an accident just a little more bearable.

Responsibility for Rented/Borrowed Automobiles

This optional coverage protects you if you damage a car or trailer that you rent or borrow anywhere in Canada and the United States. Depending on what kind of vehicle you are renting for personal use, this means you won’t have to pay extra for the rental agency’s insurance.

*Note: If your vehicle is 10 or more years old, Collision and Comprehensive coverage will NOT be calculated automatically in your quote; however, you may choose to add coverage, adjust the deductibles, and then recalculate the premium.

About Optional Coverage

In addition to the coverage required by law, we offer optional coverage that you can choose to add to your premium calculation when you get an auto insurance quote.

For example, you may choose to add optional coverage like Collision, Comprehensive, Transportation Replacement, and Responsibility for Rented/Borrowed Automobiles based on your needs. You may only add Removing Depreciation Deduction if your vehicle is less than two years old.
